One of the most important and popular performances during festivals in Bhutan,The Black Hat dance is an enactment of an esoteric and powerful practice of Vajrayāna Buddhism. Based on Mahāyāna Buddhism and its theory of altruism to liberate all sentient beings, but equipped with exceptional expedient methods, tantric Buddhism advocates using violent and terrifying methods out of ruthless compassion in order to tame unruly beings. The dancer represents a master who has the spiritual power to subjugate a demonic force and transform the negative energy into a positive one.

About the Artist
As a young kid I had little interest in academics and enjoyed drawing. It became my favorite thing to do and eventually I realized the love for art at a very young age. I joined VAST Bhutan in 1998. I gained a lot of knowledge which encouraged me to pursue a career in art as a full-time artist. Today, I am a contemporary artist based in Thimphu, working as a freelancer. My work has been exhibited in several Asian countries such as Nepal, Malaysia, China and India.
Born 1983, from Trashigang
